Q: When I use my router in its table, I do fine, but when I use it by hand for edge routing, it skips and jumps around. Can you help?
A: Carol Reed: Positive control for handheld edge routing operations require sconsistent contact with the edge of the wood. That requires only three things. The first is a carbide bit with a bearing to follow the edge. The second is an offset base for your router. Always keep the handle end of the offset base over the workpiece and hold the bearing against the edge of the wood. The third is to pass the router in a counterclockwise direction around your workpiece.
